So about 2 weeks ago on the evening of Sat 29th April, Antaresia had the pleasure to perform at La Femme, Un Changement, a sold-out boutique performance night held in Brunswick, Melbourne. Hosted by The Gilded Mask (Elise & Brigid from Antaresia), the event was a beautiful celebration of female artists of the avant garde, spanning the artistic genres of dance, circus, performance art & spoken word poetry. www.thegildedmask.com.au
The Feature Artist was the one & only Mat Jacob,
all the way here from Barcelona, Spain!!
"Mat Jacob is a dancer who has dedicated herself to the art of dance. Her diverse training and unique voice in the dance are a fresh breathe of air."
-Kami Liddle, Tribal Fusion Dancer
For more on Mat Jacob:
Mat’s tour in Australia was a rousing success, after having been here 2 years ago her popularity & influence has certainly spread. She started in Sydney for a mini-intensive hosted by Nina Parissi, with a hafla on the Sunday night. Mat then travelled to Adelaide for the following week filled with private lessons in ITS & tribal fusion technique and a public weekend of workshops hosted by Regan Gardner of Belly Dance Arabesque. http://bellydancearabesque.com.au/
Arabesque also hosted a show on the Friday night,
“Soul Fire II” which showcased the school’s myriad of different dance & music styles including all forms of bellydance (classical, fusion, ITS, ATS, contemporary, gypsy & more!!) as well as other cultural & folkloric styles. The workshops in Adelaide were absolutely packed to the rafters with dancers ready & willing to learn from this master of the art! Respect to the Adelaide community for such a supportive turnout!
Regan, as Australia’s only current Certified ITS Teacher, held 2 public workshops offered to her ITS students, which was a unique chance to get into the nitty-gritty details of this fun, playful yet precise dance ‘game’ to play in a group of dancers. Mat’s knowledge in this area is profound, and she was able to bring a whole palette of new material to the table, including formations, transitions and a handful of exciting new combos! A very
enlightening experience indeed for the ITS fans, for
which it was evident the dancers were are all so grateful
Mat also taught a fun, quirky & outside-the-box-in-true-Mat-style Choreography class. Choreography workshops give the student an opportunity to step inside the ‘mind’ (or feet?) of the creating dancer, and this was a wild ride. Very insightful and so much fun. Mat’s final workshop in Adelaide was a sloooooow technique fusion experience. Think plenty of juicy, ooey-gooey, and deeeeep inside movements, with that stunning visual effect that we all know & love in tribal fusion bellydance.
The Gilded Mask hosted the Melbourne workshops taught by Mat during her Australian tour. Classes included looking into Mechanical Weightlessness, that controlled floaty dance quality evident in many hip-hop & urban styles; an ITS beginner’s ‘taster’ workshop, the improvised dance format from Unmata (CA); and the popular Studio to Stage, a full day workshop which included learning a few short combos based on Unmata ITS moves, mixing the combos into various patterns & rhythms, and then playing with them individually & in small groups to prepare a ‘choreographic’ presentation. The ‘Stage’ part of ‘Studio to Stage’ happened later that night at La Femme, and 15 dancers from the workshop, including Mat, graced the opening of the event.
She was an absolute pleasure to be around and if we have anything to do with it, she’ll be back again for sure. The Gilded Mask would like to especially thank all the wonderful dancers who supported the Melbourne event by attending workshops, performed at La Femme, Un Changement or came to see the show. It’s no small thing to take on the project of hosting an International dancer, and we couldn’t do it without that support in the local community, so thank you. We hope your dancing has been enriched by the experience.
Until the next event, go well, keep dancing & see you soon!
